Privacy Policy

1. Introduction

This Privacy Policy explains what we collect, how we use it, and the choices you have.

By using the Service, you agree to the collection and use of information in accordance with this policy. If you do not agree, please do not use the Service.

2. Information We Collect

2.1 Information you give us

  • Phone Number: Required. Texting is how the Service works, so your mobile number is your identity on mapi.
  • First Name: Optional. If you give us one, it is how your matched groups will know you.
  • Conversations with mapi: The contents of the messages you exchange with mapi.
  • What you tell mapi: Your cravings and interests, your neighborhood, and your availability, as you share them in conversation.
  • Post-hang feedback: After a hang, mapi may ask how it went. We collect your hang-again votes and any free-text reasons you give about the people you met. This feedback is never shown to other users.

2.2 Information collected automatically

  • Log Data: When you visit our website, our hosting provider processes standard request logs, including IP address, browser type, access times, and referring URLs.
  • Website Analytics: Pages reached by scanning a printed code (addresses beginning /qr/) load PostHog to record that the page was opened and which printed code it came from. Session recording and automatic capture of your clicks are switched off. PostHog attaches the page address, referring URL, browser user agent, device type and a session identifier to that one event. No other page on this website loads analytics.
  • Local Storage: During the registration flow we store your pending claim in your browser's local storage so that refreshing the page does not lose it. It is not sent to advertisers and you can clear it through your browser.

We do not collect your precise location. We do not run an app on your phone.

3. How We Use Your Information

We use the information we collect to:

  • Reply to your texts and run the Service
  • Match you into groups. Matching is primarily automated, using signals our AI derives from your conversations, like your interests, availability, and neighborhood. Authorized personnel may access limited conversation content only when needed for support, safety, abuse prevention, debugging, or legal compliance.
  • Plan hangs and text the finished plan to your group
  • Improve matching and the quality of the Service
  • Detect, prevent, and address abuse, fraud, and technical issues
  • Comply with legal obligations

4. What Other Users See

mapi has no public profiles, feeds, or posts. Other users only learn about you when you are matched into a group together, and then only:

  • Your first name, and
  • What you told mapi about your interests.

Your post-hang feedback, including hang-again votes and anything you write about specific people, is never shown to other users.

5. How We Share Your Information

We do not sell your personal information. We share it only in these circumstances:

  • With your matched group: Your first name and the interests you told mapi about, as described in section 4.
  • Service Providers: Trusted third-party companies that help us operate the Service, bound by confidentiality obligations. These include third-party AI model providers that process message contents to generate replies and matches; our SMS delivery provider, which sends our messages to your number; Vercel, which hosts this website and processes request logs including your IP address; Supabase, which hosts the database your registration is stored in; and PostHog, which receives the single analytics event described in section 2.2 when you open a page reached from a printed code.
  • Legal Requirements: When required by law, court order, or governmental authority.
  • Business Transfers: In connection with a merger, acquisition, or sale of assets, your information may be transferred.

6. Data Retention

We keep your phone number, name, and conversation history for as long as you use the Service, so mapi can remember you between hangs. If we have not heard from you in 24 months, we delete or anonymize your information. You can ask us to delete your information at any time: reply STOP to any message to stop hearing from us, or email us at the address in section 11 and we will remove your data, except where retention is required by law.

Post-hang feedback is kept so we can improve matching and keep the community safe. It is deleted or anonymized on the same schedule as the rest of your information.

7. Data Security

We implement industry-standard security measures to protect your information, including encryption in transit and at rest and access controls. However, no method of transmission over the internet is 100% secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.

8. Your Rights and Choices

You can:

  • Stop all texts at any time by replying STOP to any message
  • Ask what personal data we hold about you
  • Ask us to correct inaccurate data
  • Ask us to delete your data

9. Age Requirement

The Service is only for people 18 and older. We do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 18. If we learn we have, we will delete it promptly.

10. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of any material changes by posting the updated policy on this page and updating the "Last updated" date. Your continued use of the Service after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
